Who is George Raymond?

The Mississippi burning trial involved the 1964 murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, three political activists during the American Civil Rights Movement. The murders of James Chaney, a 21-year-old black man from Meridian, Mississippi; Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old Jewish anthropology student from New York City; and Michael Schwerner, a 24-year-old Jewish CORE organizer and former social worker also from New York, symbolized the risks of participating in the Civil Rights Movement in the South during what became known as "Freedom Summer", dedicated to voter registration. This is his story!

George Raymond Jr. was born January 1, 1943 in New Orleans Louisiana. In his career, George influenced some of Mississippi's most well-known activists including Anne Moody, C.O.Chinn and Annie Devine. George was also involved with some of the most famous Civil Rights activities such as the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in and Freedom Summer, which was an attempt to register as many black voters as possible in Mississippi.

In the years 1963-1965 George was subjected to intense police intimidation and violence. He was pistol-whipped by an officer and then charged with intimidating a police officer. He was driving a group of people home after a meeting when they were stopped by the police, who took Raymond behind their car and beat him severely. Raymond was constantly stopped for no reason, having a shotgun pointed at his head while he was arrested for "reckless driving."
